About the EMC Quality Assurance Program

EMC maintains a dedicated, trained and qualified team of Quality Assurance and Quality Control personnel who are completely independent of production pressures and answer only to the President and Owner. Our Quality Policy is embodied in our Vision and Mission Statement Core Values.

EMC’s quality program certifications and achievements are as follows:

ISO Certified quality program since 1999. Our Chesapeake and Courtland shops are currently both ISO 9001:2008 certified and our registrar, IMS, performs surveillance audits every (6) months at our request to assure that our program remains in compliance with the standard.

A copy of our ISO 9001:2008 certificate can be found here.

UL Certified since 1978. Our current certification for both EMC Chesapeake and EMC Courtland can be found here and here.

Navsea Sealed Insulation System Certified since 1993 and SUPSHIP audited since 1980. Our experienced team works closely with our local NAVY contractors to complete work on time and to meet all purchase order and related standard item, technical manual, specification and drawing requirements.

SKF Certified Rebuilder of Electric Motors. Although we have held this certification previously, both our Chesapeake and Courtland sites were re-audited in 2013 to SKF ‘Technical Requirements’ specification and we renewed our commitment to follow SKF’s best practices.

10CFR50 Appendix B / 10CFR21 compliant nuclear safety-related quality program since 2005. We began development of our nuclear program in the early 90’s and now have a mature program that has been NUPIC-audited since 2005. Our program is proactive to issues that affect the nuclear industry and over the past few years we have implemented a Suspect / Counterfeit item detection and prevention program and we are now developing our Human Performance program.

Commercial Grade Dedication Program that is modelled after EPRI NP-5652. Our process is a collaboration of the Engineering, Quality and Project departments, who work together to determine the need for a replacement item and then to generate and complete the dedication package including Technical Evaluation, Sampling Plan, Critical Characteristic Verification Record and Certificate of Conformance.

EMC offers rewind of safety-related, environmentally qualified (EQ) motors through use of EPRI’s EQ Insulation System Qualification Program. Due to EMC’s involvement in the qualification process for this project, we are fully licensed to use the system. The insulation systems qualified are:

  • Medium Voltage (up to 7 KV), form wound, outside containment
  • Low Voltage (up to 600 V), random wound, inside containment, intermittent duty (MOV Motors)
  • Low Voltage (up to 600 V), random wound, inside containment, continuous duty

All three qualification reports are available for review by the utility.

EMC has been a member of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association (EASA) since 1962, South Tidewater Association of Ship Repairers (STASR), now the Virginia Ship Repair Association (VSRA) since 1995. EMC is also a member of the Large Electric Motor Users Group (LEMUG), AMA, Propeller Club, VA Maritime Association, Nuclear Industry Assessment Committee (NIAC), International Maintenance Institute and a NETA affiliate.
